"The market for health & safety talent remains one of the strongest. Like any other sector it has not been immune to redundancies, but fortunately there is still plenty of demand for good people.
Certain sectors, like construction have been quite severely hit. House building for instance is right down, although the "civils" side is still performing relatively well. Other sectors, such as energy, are still growing. On compliance grounds alone, health, safety & environmental considerations cannot simply be abandoned in tougher climates. The dynamics may change, but whether companies employ people directly, or outsource the function, people are still at the heart of making things happen."
Paul Roebuck remains very positive about the future of health & safety careers,
"The overall demand trend for health, safety & environmental talents is one of growth, with several thousand more people needed in the UK over the next 10 years.
The vast majority of health & safety professionals around today did not start in that profession but took advantage of training opportunities to move into that field. Some of today's most senior health and safety people left school with no qualifications and through training, hard work and belief in what they were doing have achieved their success.
If you are thinking of changing sector, then I can thoroughly recommend taking advantage of any training opportunities that will help you to move into the health, safety and environmental sectors."
As Paul cites, most health & safety professionals do not start off in this area. An excellent example of this is members of the Connaught Compliance Training Services' Health & Safety Consultants team.
