Connaught now training in Sri Lanka for Finlays

 9th Jun 2008

The UK 's largest provider of NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) courses, Corporate Health and Safety Solutions (Connaught) has won a further contract with Finlays to provide consultancy and training to their tea Plantation in Sri Lanka.

The Cardiff based company, part of the National Britannia Group, had provided consultancy and training for Finlays in Kenya last year and on the back of that success Operations Director Brenig Moore explained what it entailed,

Finlays Tea Plantation

"Finlays are addressing their total social responsibility with an attitude befitting a leading player in the tea beverage market. Finlays have been based in Sri Lanka since 1893, making them one of the country's oldest companies, some of the machinery dates back to the 1890's and many of the buildings are made of wood which combined with the newer drying machines make the old buildings potential tinder boxes. There are other considerations, too; the nature of the plantations means that everyone works and lives together in close proximity, with Finlays providing housing and schooling and Finlays has an open and forward-thinking approach to health and safety investment." He explained,

"We spent the first week auditing the Health and Safety systems on the plantations, addressing what improvements should be made in terms of buildings, machinery and addressing training needs. In the second week, we trained 23 of their Superintendents (managers) using a course we designed based on the NEBOSH International General Certificate, condensed into one week. I'm delighted to say that all the candidates passed, including CEO of the plantation, Mr Dyhan Madawala, who is a driving force in ensuring that Finlays provides a Healthy and Safe environment for all their staff."

Connaught are currently producing a full Management System which will be used in all of Finlays Plantations, including those in Kenya , Sri Lanka and Uganda .
