Is The Recession Firing Vandals' Imagination?

 7th May 2009

Those of you involved in health & safety know the value of risk assessments.

Recent findings from AXA, one of the largest insurers of SMEs in the UK , reveal that the amount of crimes against businesses hasincreased by around 10% for the second consecutive half-year. The Business Crime Index also reveals a marked increase in what could be categorised as 'recessionary' crime.

Gregor Elrick, Head of Property at AXA said:
"Both malicious damage and arson tend to go up in a recession as premises are left unoccupied and unprotected by failed businesses, making them easier targets for vandals. Additionally, arson committed by business owners looking to claim on their insurance can rise in recessionary times."

The AXA Business Crime Index, now in its 5th year, shows that while the actual cost of crime remains at a similar level (down 0.04% year on year), businesses are now more likely to become a victim of crime. Around one in fourteen (7%) has been targeted in the last year, and as the recession bites, AXA believes this figure is likely to increase.

You can ensure that your business property is as risk-free as possible by taking measures to counter the likelihood of arson. This includes making it obvious that your business is protected. Most arson attacks are made by opportunistic vandals who will often target empty buildings, but many successful working businesses are alsohit by arson attacks, so check that your fire risk assessment is up-to-date and crucially that you are up-to-date with the latestfire regulations by undertaking a a fire training course.
