Alex, was commended by the judges of the 2009 SHP IOSH Awards in the consultant of the year category hosted by TV star Hugh Dennis. He was singled out for praise for his recent work in Uganda, where he has been working with the country's Safety Council to improve fire safety measures in schools. The Safety Council has identified fire safety as a priority area they want to address as part of their efforts to produce a national framework for health & safety management. |
 | Alex said: "I travelled to Uganda and visited a number of schools to review existing fire safety arrangements, identify key issues and develop standards and training materials. The main challenge in Uganda was to develop realistic standards that were workable and would produce a measurable difference given the tight financial constraints these schools operate within.
"It was an honour to be involved in this important work that will hopefully make a real difference to young Ugandan people, and even more of an honour to be recognised by my peers for my work." The judges praised Alex's work for the Ugandan Safety Council, finding it an "admirable project in which it was clear the consultant was committed to bringing about change."
