However for those who are facing redundancy or are unemployed there are funding options available to help you gain the right training, qualifications and support you need to get you back to work. Connaught Training work closely with Job Centre Plus helping hundreds of individuals access the best qualifications with financial assistance if the individual meets the criteria. Two individuals' experiences who benefited from funding to achieve much needed qualifications to improve their job prospects:
Individual's experience of turning his career around with training Tony Fleming who was made redundant for the first time in 26 years from a multi national equipment hire corporation, A-Plant recognised the demand for NEBOSH qualifications. As a General Manager in his previous role he had been responsible for a lot of health & safety issues and wanted to use his experience in this area & gain the NEBOSH Certificate that is required by all employers as a foundation. He plans to transfer his skills into another sector less damaged by the economic climate, acknowledging that there are still jobs available in health & safety. He was eligible for funding through Job Centre Plus and Connaught Training who work with them were chosen as the training provider for the NEBOSH Certificate. He attended the 2 week course at our Warrington centre. He felt the course was "well run, condensed and a very comprehensive range of subjects covered" He plans to continue his studies and take the NEBOSH Diploma in 2010 and secure his career plans to "progress into a safety management position or similar quality assurance role within a large organisation."
Delegate's access to funding for qualifications Vince Merriman was made redundant from his role as Regional Contracts Manager for Abbott Group Ltd Fenestration for the new build industry. Feedback from an application for a job as an Environmental Health Officer underlined the need to refresh his environmental training having completed a Diploma course 10 years ago and therefore took the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management with Connaught. Vince comments on his experience " I re-assessed myself and looked at what transferable skills I had." He also completed IOSH Managing Safely having carried out risk assessments in his former job but had no recognised qualification to support this. He remarks, " I found both courses that I attended excellent. I was hungry for the knowledge and information as both subjects have always been of great interest to me. All 3 of the lecturers had different styles; however all were effective in delivery of the content and on the button with their time management. I found them passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable." He gained funding for his training via the rapid response service through Job Centre Plus.
He now feels more positive about his future, "Having completed the courses, they are now fresh on my CV. The IEMA membership will also open a new job market to me. Fingers crossed this will assist me in gaining employment early in 2010." His future career plans are to get into Facility Management or Environmental Management.
