Organisation Profile

Cleveland Potash, a business unit of ICL Fertilizers, is a producer and supplier of Potash fertilizers for agriculture and industry uses and operates the UK 's only Potash mine based in the North Yorkshire Moors. They employ 800 staff and use the latest technology, machinery and equipment to harvest Potash and salt deposits in the UK 's deepest mine at 1 km beneath the Moors.

Needs Analysis

Due to the nature of the Potash mining operation Cleveland Potash understood that a good foundation in health and safety was required by their staff, in particular employees involved in mobile plant, processing and mining activities. They needed an in-depth knowledge and recognised level of competence in health and safety for middle managers and staff in first line supervision . They wanted Connaught to provide an interactive NEBOSH course with comprehensive materials led by Consultants who had an understanding of Cleveland Potash's health and safety needs that could guarantee high pass rates. They required a delivery pattern of day release.

Why Connaught

They chose Connaught because they are the largest UK provider of the NEBOSH Certificate consistently gaining excellent pass rates and with a large team of highly qualified Consultants, they were in a position to meet their delivery pattern.

Training Solution

They established their principal objectives of gaining an in-depth understanding of health and safety to be used in their day to day roles and successful completion of this level of qualification. It was agreed that 39 delegates split in to 2 groups attended 1 day a week over 10 weeks Connaught Consultants undertaking the training were briefed on Cleveland Potash and the delegates' exact needs from the course.

On the first day of the course, delegates were given a comprehensive set of contemporary training materials in full colour presented in an easy to follow format with explanatory images, diagrams etc and workbooks with exam guidance and sample answers to ensure the delegates achieved success. Connaught Consultant used PowerPoint to present the course using relevant workplace examples that Cleveland Potash staff could relate to in their jobs.

After completing the course with the last day dedicated to revision & exam preparation, the two 2-hour exams were held on an agreed date. In the set of exams for the first group, the excellent results spoke for themselves: There was a near 100% pass rate with 20 distinctions & 14 credits achieved.

"As Training & Development Manager for Cleveland Potash, completing the NEBOSH Certificate has given me the knowledge to ask more appropriate questions when a health & safety training need has been highlighted. This ensures better planned and cost effective health & safety training can be delivered. It has also provided me with the opportunity to achieve a personal goal & I am delighted to have done this to such a high standard." Craig Hargreaves , Training & Development Manager

Future Plans

As a result of the success of the NEBOSH training, Cleveland Potash are now considering the NEBOSH Certificate as mandatory for all middle managers and IOSH Managing Safely as mandatory for all first line supervisory staff.

"Since completing the course I have become more aware of my surroundings in terms of health and safety both in the working activities at the mine but also away from work. It has given me a huge insight into health and safety legislation which my colleagues and I were previously unaware of. I believe this course should form an integral part of health and safety awareness at a management level and should be a prerequisite for the job role." Dave Williams, Underground Section Manager.
